An exotic scene of Matterhorn over Riffelsee lake at twilight with full moon that is submerged in purple hue.
The Matterhorn is called the Mountain of Mountains, becoming the iconic emblem of the Alps in general. For around one hundred years, the mountain has attracted an increasing number of visitors and climbers. It is a large, near-symmetrical pyramidal peak, one of the highest summits in the Alps and Europe. This shape is the result of cirque erosion due to multiple glaciers diverging from the peak. The four steep faces, rising above the surrounding glaciers, face the four compass points and are split by the Hörnli, Furggen, Leone/Lion, and Zmutt ridges.
The Matterhorn remained unclimbed after most of the other great Alpine peaks had been attained and became the subject of an international competition for the summit. The first ascent of the Matterhorn was in 1865 from Zermatt by a party led by Edward Whymper; it ended when four of its seven members fell to their deaths on the descent. This disaster, later portrayed in several films, marked the end of the golden age of alpinism. It is estimated that over 500 alpinists have died on the Matterhorn, making it one of the deadliest peaks in the world.
The lake of the Riffelsee has one of nature's finest spectacles, which is the reflection of the Matterhorn on the surface of the water. Besides, from the lake, we can contemplate the king of mountains standing solitary on the vast sky background. Twilight is a good time to visit Riffelsee, when the lake is still, and the color of the sky is mesmerizing. The sky, at this time, is in the major purple color which looks mysterious and connected to the supernatural, exotic. Since it is a polarizing color, people can either love or hate it. But in this photo, the Matterhorn over Riffelsee at twilight in purple hue definitely brings you a peaceful state of mind. Along with the full moon, the scene calms and soothes you, makes you feel a serenity.
