In this photograph is a stunning scenery of an oil platform on ocean during a raging storm. This oil platform (offshore platform, offshore drilling rig) is one of the world's largest standing fixed platforms in the North Sea. The sea is a popular tourist destination in bordering countries (the UK, Demark,...) and more recently has developed into a rich source of energy resources including fossil fuels. As early as 1859, oil was discovered in onshore areas around the North Sea and natural gas as early as 1910. However, the exploitation of the North Sea oil reserves began just before the 1973 oil crisis, and the rise of international oil prices made the large investments needed for extraction much more attractive. Although the production costs are relatively high, the quality of the oil, the political stability of the region, and the proximity of important markets in western Europe have made the North Sea an important oil-producing region.
We can tell a big storm going to happen soon in this photograph by the densely gloomy sky and the vigorously rolling waves. In this chaos or both the earth and the sky, the oil platform - human's modern technology - stands still. It's proof of the development of the human world.
